How to Write an Annotated Bibliography: Examples and an AI-Assisted Workflow
An annotated bibliography is a list of source citations followed by short notes that summarize, assess, or explain how each source will be used. Unlike a standard bibliography, it records what you learned from each source and why that source belongs in your project.
The safest AI-assisted workflow does not ask a model to invent citations or write the final entry from memory. It keeps every extracted claim traceable to the original paper and PDF page. What an annotated bibliography includes
Every entry has two parts: a complete citation and an annotation. The citation identifies the source. The annotation demonstrates your understanding of it. Your instructor may ask for one function or a combination of three:
- Descriptive annotation: states the research question, scope, method, and main finding without judging the source.
- Evaluative annotation: assesses credibility, evidence quality, limitations, or usefulness for a particular claim.
- Reflective annotation: explains how the source changes, supports, or complicates your own research direction.
A strong entry often moves in that order: what the source did, how well it supports its conclusion, and how you will use it. That structure keeps the annotation analytical instead of turning it into a copied abstract.

The length range is a planning aid, not a rule. A professor may request 75 words, 250 words, or separate summary and evaluation paragraphs. Confirm the rubric before writing so you do not solve the wrong assignment.
How to write an annotated bibliography in six steps
Step 1: Confirm the assignment and citation style
Write down the required style edition, number of sources, source types, annotation length, and whether the instructor wants description, evaluation, reflection, or all three. An MLA Works Cited entry and an APA reference arrange the same facts differently, but the intellectual work of evaluating evidence remains yours.
Step 2: Collect real sources before drafting
Save the publisher page, DOI, full text, and complete citation metadata for every source. Prefer a DOI when one exists because it gives the article a stable identifier. Never begin with a citation produced only by a chatbot. A citation audit of 636 references found that 55% of GPT-3.5 citations and 18% of GPT-4 citations were fabricated (Walters and Wilder, PDF p. 1).
Step 3: Extract the same fields from every paper
For each source, capture the research question, study design, sample or corpus, main result, limitation, and relevance to your topic. A consistent evidence table makes sources comparable. Step 4: Verify every important claim against the paper
Open the original page behind each extracted statement. Record the PDF page beside the note, especially for numbers, limitations, and authors' cautions. The page marker is working evidence for you; it does not automatically belong in the final citation. This source-first habit is also the core of an evidence-preserving paper summary.
Step 5: Write the annotation in your own words
Start with one sentence on purpose and method, add the most relevant result, evaluate one strength or limitation, and end with the source's role in your project. Keep evaluation specific. “Peer reviewed” alone is not an assessment; “small sample and few reviewers limit generalization” identifies an actual constraint reported by the study.
Step 6: Apply the required citation style and audit the entry
Move verified metadata into Zotero or Word, choose the required style, and compare the output with the current style guide. Citation software reduces mechanical work but cannot decide whether the right paper, DOI, edition, or interpretation has been captured. Three finished annotations based on real papers
1. Descriptive and evaluative annotation
Gao et al. (2023). This study compared 50 original medical-research abstracts with 50 abstracts generated by ChatGPT from titles and journals. An automated detector distinguished the groups with an AUROC of 0.94 (PDF p. 1). Blinded human reviewers correctly identified 68% of generated abstracts, but they also mislabeled 14% of original abstracts as generated (PDF p. 2). The design is useful because it combines a detector with human judgment rather than treating either as a perfect test. Its small sample and limited reviewer group, acknowledged by the authors on PDF p. 2, restrict broad claims about every discipline or model. For a project on AI-assisted academic writing, the paper provides measured evidence that fluent text can remain difficult to classify reliably.
2. Evaluative annotation
Walters, W. H., and Wilder, E. I. (2023). The authors audited 636 citations generated for 84 papers. They found that 55% of GPT-3.5 citations and 18% of GPT-4 citations were fabricated (PDF p. 1). Accuracy problems continued even among citations that referred to real works: 43% of real GPT-3.5 citations had substantive errors, compared with 24% for GPT-4 (PDF pp. 4–5). This direct citation-level audit is more useful for an annotated-bibliography workflow than a general claim that language models sometimes hallucinate. It quantifies both nonexistent sources and corrupted metadata. 3. Descriptive and reflective annotation
Salvagno, M., Taccone, F. S., and Gerli, A. G. (2023). This article is a perspective, not an empirical benchmark. It describes possible roles for AI in organizing a paper, creating an initial draft, and proofreading while emphasizing expert review, human judgment, and risks involving plagiarism or inaccurate content (PDF p. 1). Because the article does not test those uses experimentally, it should not be cited as proof that AI improves writing quality. Its value is conceptual: it helps define a responsible division of labor. Research-integrity checklist
- Can you open every cited paper through its DOI, publisher page, or library record?
- Did you verify every number and limitation against the original PDF page?
- Does the annotation distinguish what the authors found from what you infer?
- Did you label a perspective, review, or commentary accurately instead of presenting it as an experiment?
- Is the citation style correct for the assigned edition, including names, capitalization, dates, and DOI form?
- Did you write the annotation in your own words and preserve any required quotation marks and page citations?
A clean annotated bibliography is an evidence map in miniature: every entry shows the source, the claim, the quality of support, and the reason it matters. Build that chain before polishing the format.
